7-9 January 2019, Manipal, India - Systematic Reviews and Evidence and Gap Maps workshop

Introductory Workshop on Evidence and Gap Maps

Prasanna School of Public Health, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Manipal

Background: The evidence for making policy, programme and practice decisions is best based on careful analyses and syntheses of multiple studies. However conducting and commissioning new research without being informed by existing research can result in the duplication and multiple agencies commissioning same research which, in turn, may hamper the scientific process.  Evidence and Gap Maps, an upcoming evidence tool can assist users and producers in addressing some of these challenges.

This three-day workshop will use a combination of lectures, group work and practical sessions to introduce participants to the methods used for Campbell Evidence and Gap Maps and systematic reviews. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand what are Evidence and Gap Maps (EGMs)
  • Understand the role that well-conducted Evidence and Gap Map can play in informing decisions
  • Understand the components of EGMs and how they differ from systematic reviews
  • Be familiar with framing answerable research questions (setting the scope) and searching for relevant studies using multiple sources
  • Be familiar with the Quality appraisal for systematic reviews and primary studies
  • Be familiar with EPPI reviewer 4 and Revman softwares
  • Understand reporting standards and guidelines for Campbell EGMs
  • Be familiar with Campbell Title Registration Form (TRF) for a systematic review and EGMs

Methods: This workshop includes lectures, discussion, group and computer exercises. Participants should bring their own laptops and should download Cochrane’s RevMan software from this site: http://community.cochrane.org/tools/review-production- tools/revman-5/revman-5-download prior to the workshop. Participant should also download EPPI reviewer 4 and have created accounts on EPPI reviewer 4 from the site: https://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/cms/Default.aspx?tabid=2935 prior to workshop
