Campbell Collaboration announces review of AI equity evidence

The objective of this review is to establish a level set on the questions we should be asking about AI and equity. This initial environmental scan can be used to inform future research and evidence synthesis.

AI has permeated society, with tools for improving health and social care, humanitarian assistance, transportation, hiring practices, monitoring policing and crime, and gaining efficiencies in research such as systematic reviews. However, there are questions about risks to society as a means for generating and propagating misinformation, inherent biases in AI, long-term effects on learning if AI is used by students, potential for extinguishing junior white collar jobs and the size of the carbon footprint of AI.

The Campbell Collaboration mission is Better evidence for a better world. We aim to promote positive social and economic change through the production and use of systematic reviews and other evidence synthesis for evidence-based policy and practice.

The work will include focus groups with leaders in diverse sectors (e.g. social, technological) about the uses of different types of AI, benefits and risks to society, followed by a mapping review to identify available evidence on these potential benefits and risks. We will write a final report which will include a summary of the findings from focus group and one on one discussions, as well as mapping of available evidence.
