Coders for data extraction sought for January-April 2023

Terms of reference for impact evaluation consultants to complete data extraction: interventions to keep children from involvement in violence

The Campbell Collaboration is a US 501(c)(3) US registered non-profit organisation. In 2021, Campbell produced for the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) an evidence and gap map (EGM), available here: https://youthendowmentfund.org.uk/evidence-and-gap-map/.

The EGM is the world’s largest resource of the evidence, and gaps in evidence, on the effectiveness of approaches to keep children safe from involvement in violence. It forms the basis for the YEF toolkit, which provides accessible, online information for decision makers who work with and commission services for children and young people: https://youthendowmentfund.org.uk/toolkit.

The EGM currently contains over 1,700 impact evaluations. A key component of the YEF Toolkit is the ‘estimated impact on violent crime’, a rating to indicate whether a particular intervention had a high, moderate, low or even harmful effect on violent crime. The estimated impact is based on effect size calculations from impact evaluations.

A small team of experienced coders has already started producing effect sizes from the impact evaluations contained in the EGM. We are now recruiting new coders, who will work with the experienced coders, to complete the data extraction.

Objectives

Campbell, in collaboration with the Universities of Cambridge and Greenwich and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has been commissioned by YEF to calculate effect sizes from each impact evaluation in the EGM, and to produce an effect size database (ESDB). Campbell is recruiting a team of impact evaluation research consultants to produce the effect sizes for the ESDB.

Impact evaluation research consultants will be expected to:

  • Attend training on the calculation of effect sizes from experimental and quasi-experimental designs in mid-January 2023;
  • Produce effect sizes and corresponding variances for impact evaluations included in the EGM, at the study level and for pre-specified sub-groups;
  • Work in teams to quality check codes to ensure accuracy;
  • Contribute to written reports;
  • Attend regular progress meetings.

Organisation, remuneration and person specification

Impact evaluation research consultants will be contracted by Campbell, led by Howard White, supported by Hannah Gaffney (Cambridge), Darrick Jolliffe (Greenwich), and Hugh Sharma Waddington (LSHTM).

Remuneration will be according to previous experience and location.

Applicants for the position of research consultant should have the following skills and experience:

  • have obtained (or expect to obtain) a Master’s degree with a quantitative methods component (e.g. Economics, Econometrics, Quantitative Social Science, Public Health)
  • proficiency in English.

It is also desirable that applicants have received training in impact evaluation, causal inference or inferential statistics.

Applicants must attend the effect size training in January 2023, and be available to work in January-April 2023. Applicants may work full-time or part-time; part-time applicants are expected to be available for a minimum of two days a week.

Please send a CV and short cover letter, indicating your suitability for the role and time availability between mid-January and end-April, together with your likely availability over the period 16 January-30 April, and average days available per week, to Yashika Murly: ymurly@campbellcollaboration.org.
