CEO for the Campbell Collaboration: request for applications

The Campbell Collaboration’s vision is ‘Better evidence for a better world’. We aim to achieve this vision through our mission of promoting positive social and economic change through the production and use of systematic reviews and other evidence synthesis for evidence-based policy and practice in the social and economic sectors.

The Campbell Collaboration is seeking a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Established in 2000, Campbell is a widely-respected international research network which publishes high quality evidence syntheses, such as systematic reviews of social and economic interventions. Campbell is registered as a non-profit organisation (501c(3)) in Pennsylvania, USA. The collaboration consists of a network of Coordinating Groups (CGs) and National and Regional Centres (NRCs) supported by a small secretariat and overseen by a Board (see https://www.campbellcollaboration.org for further information about Campbell).

At a time when using evidence in public policy is taking centre stage, being CEO of Campbell is an exciting opportunity for an individual committed to supporting global evidence-based policy. The CEO represents Campbell externally to governments, funders and the public, and is responsible for strategic direction and administrative oversight in conjunction with the Board.

The successful candidate has standing in the scholarly and policy communities and a track record of successful organisational or programme leadership. The Board is looking for a leader who can consolidate the recent growth of the organisation, whilst overseeing continued expansion.

Current strategic priorities (https://campbellcollaboration.org/images/pdf/Campbell-strategy-2023-2025-public-draft.pdf) focus on:

  • Enhancing the use of evidence synthesis for decision making (for a fairer and better world)
  • Generating evidence syntheses (to create a broader body of credible and relevant evidence to influence change)
  • Building a diverse, equitable and inclusive global community (to maximise our impact).

The role of the CEO

The CEO’s key responsibilities are:

  • Undertaking activities to promote Campbell globally to policymakers, practitioners and researchers, for example by developing and maintaining relationships with user-commissioners such as the UK’s What Works Centres and the Latin American and Caribbean Evidence Hub
  • Leading fundraising for the Campbell secretariat and the work of Campbell generally
  • Facilitating Campbell’s continued growth by fostering the development of new CGs, NRCs and networks, and supporting the work of these entities
  • Reporting to the Campbell Board on progress against the work plan and the strategy
  • Grant management, such as sub-grants to third parties and contracts for substantive research work delivered by the CEO and Editor in Chief
  • Management of the Campbell secretariat
  • Ensuring that Campbell meets all legal obligations, such as maintaining registration status, annual tax returns and an annual audit.

Salary and duration of the appointment

Base compensation will be in the range of US$160,000-210,000 per annum depending on the experience of the appointee.

The CEO can be based anywhere.

The initial appointment will be for five years with opportunities for renewal.

Campbell has stable funding over the next two years. In addition, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) has committed US$250,000 a year for three years (2022-24) to support the Campbell secretariat during the transition to the new CEO.

Questions and timeline
