Social skills groups for individuals with autism spectrum disorders

Major difficulties in social interactions are a defining feature of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). As a result, social skills training has emerged as an important aspect of intervention planning.

A team led by Brian Reichov has undertaken a systematic review on the effectiveness of social skills groups for improving social competence, social communication, and the quality of life for people with ASD between the ages of 6 and 21.

The results suggest that individuals who participate in social skills groups may experience positive effects, a finding that is consistent with previous work on the subject. The review also points to the need for more research on the efficacy of these interventions.
