A new Campbell Systematic Review shows limited effectiveness of interventions against female genital mutilation in African countries. However, there were indications of positive changes in attitudes and knowledge.
In assessing the effectiveness of interventions, the review included eight studies involving over 7,000 participants in seven African countries. It also included 27 context studies from six of these countries, in order to examine factors which helped and hindered efforts to prevent FGM.
The authors, Rigmor Berg and Eva Denison, were based at the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services.
