Does "hot spots" policing simply displace crime?

A common criticism of geographically focused policing efforts is that crime simply relocates to other times and places.  Does this type of policing displace crime, or does it diffuse the benefits of crime control?

An important new Campbell systematic review addresses this issue directly. It synthesizes evidence on the degree to which geographically focused policing efforts are associated with spatial displacement of crime, or alternatively with diffusion of crime control benefits. The findings point to significant crime reduction and indications of a diffusion of benefits.

The review team was led by Kate Bowers of the Department of Security and Crime Science, University College London http://www.ucl.ac.uk/scs/people/academic-research-staff/kate-bowers
