The Ninth Annual Colloquium is upon us, and the stage is set for intensive and informative discussions on evidence, policy and practice. How can we improve peoples' lives by improving the quality of social interventions? Will the growing appreciation of the social determinants of health lead to more effective development programmes? Is enough use made of what we already know about interventions that work? Can we find strategies to improve the quality of research synthesis and to enhance its impact?

An impressive cast of hugely resourceful people from many walks of life is assembled, including many travelling from afar. High profile plenary speakers include Jonas Gahr Støre, Jonathan Shepherd and Hans Rosling. Parallel sessions feature presentations on a wide range of highly topical issues, such as: reducing homelessness; preventing partner violence; promoting childhood vaccination; improving water quality; and tackling health inequalities.

Other topics include using evidence to change complex educational systems; the transferability of US evidence-based programmes to other social systems; interventions against substance abuse; foster care and school absenteeism.

The theory and practice of effect measurement is a strong focus, and the programme includes a training opportunities for those wishing to undertake systematic reviews.

We are confident that researchers, practitioners and policymakers involved in social issues will find the event both useful and informative. Welcome to three days of challenging and constructive debate that will add impetus to the promotion of evidence based policy and practice, both in Norway and internationally!
