Training sessions

Parallel to the scientific colloquium programme, six hands-on training sessions concerning systematic reviews and meta-analysis will be offered. All sessions are given by leading figures in the field, active within the Campbell Collaboration. The training sessions will be particularly interesting for researchers and students, but anyone may participate in an optional number of sessions. Completing the training sessions will help qualify for undertaking a systematic review.

Please send an e-mail to karianne.hammerstrom@c2admin.org to express your interest in participating in the training sessions, stating which session(s) you would like to attend. Those who wish to attend the training sessions, must be registered for the Colloquium.

Monday 10:45 - 12:15

Introduction to systematic reviewing
Jeffrey C. Valentine; College of Education & Human Development, University of Louisville, USA
This session will address the history, logic, and process of systematic reviewing and meta-analysis.  Participants will also learn about how the Campbell Collaboration approaches systematic reviewing.

Searching the literature
Anne Wade; Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance, Concordia University, Canada
This session will provide a general introduction to searching for studies relevant to a systematic review, including electronic databases.  Special attention will be paid to locating grey literature.

Tuesday 10:45 - 12:15

Effect size calculation II: Advanced
Therese Pigott; School of Education, Loyola University Chicago, USA
Participants will be introduced to a variety of advanced topics in effect size computation.  It is helpful for participants to be comfortable with basic effect sizes and basic meta-analysis for this session.

13:15 - 14:45

Modeling I: Fixed effects meta-analysis and homogeneity estimation
Jeffrey C. Valentine; College of Education & Human Development, University of Louisville, USA
This session will provide an introduction to the logic behind fixed effects meta-analysis, and will show participants how to carry out a small meta-analysis by hand.  Participants will also be introduced to the concept of heterogeneity, and will be shown why it is an important component of any meta-analysis.  It is helpful for participants to be familiar with effect sizes for this session.

15:00 - 16:30

Modeling II: Random effects meta-analysis and mixed effects
Therese Pigott; School of Education, Loyola University Chicago, USA
Participants will be introduced to random effects (and mixed) meta-analysis.  It is helpful for participants to be comfortable with basic meta-analysis for this session.

Wednesday 10:45 - 12:15

Effect size calculation I: Introduction
Robert M. Bernard; Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance, Concordia University, Canada
This session will provide a general introduction to the rationale for and the calculation of effect sizes.
