Biography for Friedrich Lösel

Friedrich Lösel, Ph.D., was born in 1945. He is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Institute of Psychology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Germany). He also is a director at the Social Sciences Research Center of this university. Formerly, he was lecturer and assistant professor at the Universities of Erlangen and Bamberg, professor of psychology at the Universities of Erlangen and Bielefeld, and was offered professorships at the Universities of Freiburg, Mannheim, and Kiel. He also was a project director and deputy director at the Research Centers "Prevention and Intervention in Childhood and Adolescence" and "Socialization and Communication" of the German Research Foundation.

F.L. was President of the European Association of Psychology and Law; member and subcommittee-chairman of the Federal Government`s Commission for the Prevention and Control of Violence, chairman of the Psychology and Law Division of the German Psychological Association; visiting fellow of the British Psychological Society; secretary of the Psychology and Law Division of the International Association of Applied Psychology; member of the scientific advisory boards of the German Criminological Center and of the Netherlands Institute for Criminality and Law Enforcement; Dean of the Erlangen Faculty of Philosophy, History, and Social Sciences; rapporteur for the European Committee on Crime Problems (Council of Europe); and chairman of the German Committee for the Accreditation of Training Programs in Psychology and Law. He is chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Criminological Research Center of Lower Saxony; vice-chairman of the Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Penal Law; and a member of the International Accreditation Panel for Offender Treatment Programs of the Canadian Government. He also is an editorial board member of various national and international journals and book series.

His research interests are in the fields of clinical psychology, criminology, psychology and law, social psychology, assessment and program evaluation. He has published over 200 journal articles and book chapters. His current research is addressing risk factors, protective factors and resilience in the development of antisocial behavior; family-based early prevention; school bullying; offender treatment; hooliganism; and marital stability.
